Climate & growing season
Best suited to cool to mild growing conditions, ideally around 10–22°C. Little Gem Lettuce can be grown in warmer conditions with extra care, but prolonged heat may reduce leaf quality and encourage premature bolting. Consistent moisture, good airflow and protection from intense afternoon heat help maintain compact, tender heads.
Seed starting
Sow seeds 0.3–0.5 cm deep in seed trays or small pots filled with a fine, well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the growing medium evenly moist and place the tray in a bright location out of direct afternoon sun. Seeds usually germinate within 5–10 days. Once seedlings develop 3–4 true leaves, they are ready for transplanting.
Transplanting
Transplant seedlings when they have 3–4 true leaves and a healthy root system, usually 3–4 weeks after sowing. Water the seedlings before transplanting to reduce transplant shock. Plant at the same depth as in the seed tray and water thoroughly after transplanting. Transplanting in the late afternoon or on a cloudy day helps plants establish more quickly.
Sunlight
Little Gem Lettuce grows best in full sun to partial shade, receiving 5–6 hours of sunlight each day. In Thailand's hot climate, providing afternoon shade helps prevent heat stress and delays bolting (premature flowering), resulting in sweeter, more tender leaves.
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. Water deeply whenever the top layer of soil begins to dry, preferably in the early morning. Consistent moisture encourages crisp leaves and reduces bitterness.
Soil & growing medium
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Adding compost improves soil fertility and moisture retention, while perlite helps improve drainage and root development.
Fertilizing
Feed every 10–14 days with a balanced fertilizer or diluted liquid organic fertilizer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may produce soft leaves that are more susceptible to pests and diseases.
Harvesting
Little Gem Lettuce can be harvested 45–60 days after sowing. Harvest individual outer leaves as needed for continuous production, or cut the entire head at the base when it reaches full size. Harvest early in the morning when the leaves are crisp and cool. Wash thoroughly and refrigerate immediately to maintain freshness.
