Plant overview
Oregano is a hardy Mediterranean herb known for its aromatic leaves and distinctive savory flavor. It prefers plenty of sunlight, well-drained soil and moderate watering, making it an excellent choice for containers and home herb gardens. In Thailand, good drainage and airflow are especially important during the rainy season because oregano does not like constantly wet soil. Once established, plants can be trimmed and harvested regularly to encourage bushy new growth. The leaves can be used fresh or dried for cooking, seasoning and herbal preparations.
Climate & growing season
Warm to mild climate; grows best around 18–27°C. Suitable for Thailand with excellent drainage, good airflow and protection from prolonged heavy rain and excessive moisture.
Seed starting
Sow oregano seeds on the surface of a fine, moist seed-starting mix and press them gently into the medium. Cover very lightly or leave nearly uncovered because the tiny seeds need light for good germination. Keep the medium moist but not waterlogged. Seeds usually germinate in 7–14 days.
Transplanting
Transplant seedlings when they have several true leaves and are strong enough to handle. Harden them off gradually for about 5–7 days before moving them outdoors. Transplant into well-drained soil and water lightly after planting. Avoid transplanting during the hottest part of the day.
Sunlight
Oregano grows best in full sun with about 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plenty of light encourages compact growth and strongly aromatic leaves. In very hot periods in Thailand, morning sun with light afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress.
Watering
Water oregano moderately and allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering again. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as oregano is susceptible to root problems in waterlogged conditions. Reduce watering during rainy or humid periods.
Soil & growing medium
Use loose, well-drained soil that does not stay wet for long periods. A slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0–7.5 is suitable. For containers, use a well-draining potting mix and add perlite or another drainage material if needed. Good drainage is especially important during Thailand's rainy season.
Fertilizing
Oregano does not require heavy feeding. Mix a small amount of compost or organic matter into the soil before planting. For container plants, apply a diluted balanced or organic fertilizer about every 4–6 weeks during active growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce soft growth with less concentrated flavor and aroma.
Harvesting
Begin light harvesting once the plant is well established and has enough healthy growth. Cut individual stems just above a pair of leaves to encourage branching and a bushier plant. For the strongest flavor and aroma, harvest in the morning after the leaves have dried. Regular harvesting encourages new growth, but avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at one time.
