Flea Beetles

Tiny, round "shot holes" appear across young leaves. Severe infestations can stunt seedling growth, reduce plant vigor, and cause leaves to become ragged. Damage is most noticeable on newly emerged plants during warm, dry weather.

Symptoms

Tiny, round "shot holes" appear across young leaves. Severe infestations can stunt seedling growth, reduce plant vigor, and cause leaves to become ragged. Damage is most noticeable on newly emerged plants during warm, dry weather.

Causes

Adult flea beetles feed on leaves while larvae live in the soil and feed on roots. Warm temperatures, dry conditions, and nearby weeds or crop residues increase flea beetle populations.

Treatment

Protect young plants with insect netting or floating row covers. Keep the garden free of weeds, apply mulch to reduce egg laying, and use neem oil or insecticidal soap for light infestations. Severe infestations may require approved insecticides following label instructions.

Prevention

Prevent flea beetles by using floating row covers or insect netting, removing weeds and crop debris, rotating brassica crops each season, and keeping plants healthy with regular watering and proper fertilization. Applying mulch around plants can also reduce egg laying and protect seedlings.
