Overview

Rosemary is one of the world's most popular culinary herbs, loved for its rich aroma, evergreen foliage, and versatility in both the kitchen and the garden. Native to the Mediterranean region, Rosemary thrives in warm, sunny conditions and becomes a beautiful evergreen shrub that can provide fresh harvests for many years. Its needle-like leaves are widely used to season roasted meats, vegetables, potatoes, breads, soups, sauces, infused oils, and herbal teas. Beyond cooking, Rosemary is valued for its pleasant fragrance, ornamental beauty, and ability to attract bees and other beneficial pollinators. Although Rosemary grows slowly from seed, it rewards patient gardeners with a long-lived, drought-tolerant herb that requires very little maintenance once established. It performs exceptionally well in pots, raised beds, rock gardens, and well-drained garden soil. Whether you are creating a kitchen herb garden, pollinator garden, or simply want fresh herbs available all year round, Rosemary is an excellent choice for every home gardener.

Step-by-step guide

Rosemary Seeds — growing guide

  1. 1

    Prepare the Growing Medium

Use a light, well-draining seed-starting mix. Fill the seed tray or small pots and moisten the medium evenly before sowing. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soil because rosemary seedlings are sensitive to excess moisture.

  2. 2

    Sow the Seeds

Place the seeds on the surface and press them gently into the growing medium. Cover very lightly with a thin layer of fine mix or vermiculite. Rosemary seeds need light and warmth, so do not bury them deeply.

  3. 3

    Keep Warm and Moist

Place the tray in a bright, warm location with indirect light. Keep the growing medium lightly moist but never soggy. Covering the tray with a clear lid can help maintain humidity, but open it daily for airflow.

  4. 4

    Care for the Seedlings

Germination may take 14–30 days and can be uneven. Once seedlings appear, remove the cover and provide bright light. Water carefully around the base and allow the surface of the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings.

  5. 5

    Transplant Carefully

Transplant when the seedlings have several true leaves and are strong enough to handle. Move them into individual pots or a sunny garden area with excellent drainage. Avoid disturbing the roots more than necessary.

  6. 6

    Grow and Harvest

Place rosemary in full sun and water only when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Once the plant is established, harvest young stem tips as needed. Regular light pruning encourages bushier growth, but avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at one time.
